How to Start the Tough Conversations with your Parents


As your parents age, decisions regarding their care need to be made. These conversations are not always easy to begin and can tend to be uncomfortable. Approaching the subject in the correct manner can make all of the difference.

Start Early

The conversation can take some time to come together, so don’t wait until it’s too late. Oftentimes families don’t start talking until something serious happens, like a fall or hospital admission. Give the family plenty of time to get together, talk and make decisions.

Speak Thoughtfully

Remember that it’s not always what you say, but how you say it. Think about your parents’ personalities and how they may react to your suggestions. Be positive and speak generally. Avoid saying things like “This is what I’m going to do for you.” Instead, ask for their input and work together on a plan.
